What is GeoBrain?
GeoBrain is a comprehensive cyberinfrastructure uniquely providing advanced, specialized,
value-added, and well-integrated Earth observation data, information and knowledge services
to worldwide users. It makes large amounts of computing resources (analytic functions,
software tools, computing models, high performance computing systems, and other computing
facilities) as well as data and information resources at large organizations and distributed
locations all linked together and easily accessible, available, and usable online. Large amounts of
data from major federal Earth observation agencies, including NASA, NOAA, and USGS,
are online accessible and analyzable through GeoBrain's online user portals, essentially providing
an unprecedented, data-intensive, and CI-enabled online learning and research
environment with adequate data services, geoprocessing and analysis functions, and modeling
software tools to anyone who has a laptop/desktop computer connected to the Internet. The GeoBrain
online environment is an on-demand, human-centered and specialized computational cyber-laboratory,
which allows scientists, educators, and students to conduct dynamic geospatial discovery,
teaching and learning tasks from any Internet connected computer at any time. For this end,
GeoBrain not only meets diverse Earth science data and computational needs of a wide range of
geosciences research, education and applications, but also enables geographically distributed
geosciences communities to pursue their research and learning goals with dramatically relaxed
or no constraints of time and distance.
-
What is NEHEA?
The NASA EOS Higher Education Alliance (NEHEA) is an open and free alliance for promoting and
facilitating the wider use of NASA EOS data in teaching and research at higher education
institutes around the world, through the data-intensive Earth system learning and modeling
environment provided by GeoBrain. The GeoBrain system provides a data-enhanced learning and
research environment for NEHEA members. NEHEA members are the core developers and users of
the GeoBrain system.
-
Does one have to be a member of NEHEA to use this site?
No, but being a member has the following benefits:
1) free and prompt technical support from the development team.
2) Immediate notice of new available products and system capabilities.
3) Information and experiences sharing with other NEHEA members.
-
If there is a membership option, what perks are there to becoming one?
There is a NASA EOS Higher Education Alliance (NEHEA) membership option. Anyone can join NEHEA.
NEHEA welcomes Earth Science Educators around the world to join as associate members via
http://geobrain.laits.gmu.edu/join_nehea.html
-
Is this data free to download or is there a fee associated with downloading?
Yes, it is free; there is no fee associated with downloading.
-
Can any researcher use the GeoBrain site or is it limited to those in the academic field?
Any one can use GeoBrain site. There are no limits on usage.
-
What are the requirements on my computer for downloading most of the data?
Internet access is the only requirement for downloading the data.
-
When used in projects or published works, how should this data be cited?
Through the GeoBrain system http://geobrain.laits.gmu.edu
-
Are you taking in new associates to add to the data or are you at your limit?
The idea of this project is to provide a platform so that users can obtain
not only the raw data but also information on it, and so that users can
build their own models to obtain the information they need. Everybody can
contribute modules and models.
-
Is there a plan to expand the number of products available on the Web site in the future?
Yes. This is a 5-year project. New products will be announced as they become available.
Also, the GeoBrain system is a self-evolutionary system: with more users using the system
and contributing service modules and models, the system will have more capabilities.
-
Are the meetings open only to those on the team?
Anybody interested is welcome to request to attend a meeting.
However, the final meeting attendee list is determined by the project core teams.
-
How often are updates of data expected to occur?
Continually. The system is self-evolutionary. The development team will
make announcements about important updates.
-
What extent does the downloadable data cover (Earth, Mars, etc?)
All of the Earth
-
Who do I contact if a link doesn't work or there are technical problems downloading the data?
Aijun Chen (achen6@gmu.edu) or Peisheng Zhao (pzhao@gmu.edu)
